We have made it! The day has finally arrived!
After months and months of planning and pulling our hair out from the lack of communication provided by the travel agent assigned to us, we are finally in the air.
Both of us confessed to each other that we refused to believe the trip to Egypt was real until we were on the plane. Well, here we are! On the plane to Cairo! Yippee!! It’s still hard to believe!
We are flying EgyptAir direct to Cairo (sweet), and I’m completely entertained by everything on the plane—be it signs, announcements, TV instructions, etc— everything is in Arabic first, English second. The plane is surprisingly full, but we are two of only a handful of “tourists” heading to Egypt. Almost everyone on the plane speaks Arabic, and those Miriam has spoken to are heading back home or going to visit family.
Speaking of Miriam, I learned something very quickly about the both of us. I am the planner; Miriam is the talker. I think she has made friends with every single person on the plane. No joke. And I’m talking 55 rows, 9 seats across. She’s been getting tips about touring Cairo from the Egyptian American man sitting next to her, met an American grandmother who now lives in Cairo (who also happened to have just been in New Orleans for an International Teachers Conference), and introduced herself to a woman wearing the same shirt as she is, who is traveling back to Cairo with her six week old twin grandbabies (they are teeny-tiny!!).
The ten hour flight was not easy, having to sleep sitting up, but we managed. They ran out of dinner options by the time they got to our row, which stunk because they were left with only the fish option, which neither of us eats. Luckily, they were able to find one last chicken plate, which I tried to share with Miriam. At least the chocolate mousse filled caked was awesome, even for me, the anti-chocolate person. Yuh-mmy.
Very soon we will touch down on a new continent and be ready for a whole new adventure!
